A Study of Sunsets

A collection of sunset photos, mostly featuring Tillamook County along the beautiful Oregon Coast.  The coast is prone to fog, especially in the warmer summer months. This can bring an abrupt end to what would otherwise be a spectacular sunset.  As a result, there is a bit of a challenge to these photographs.  Late Fall, Winter, and Spring can offer some of the best sunset photography opportunities.

Floral Studies

At the start of the COVID 19 stay at home order and schools closing (I am a teacher), I embarked on a goal of posting one image every day as a means of putting a smile on someone’s face as a counter to all of the negativity in the news and on social media.  It turned out that in my neighborhood the best items to photograph were flowers.  This developed into a months-long study of photographing flowers, something that I had no intention of pursuing initially.  Here is a collection of those plus a few from across the West taken in past years to even it out.

Oceans, Bays, Lakes, and Streams

The coast is a beautiful location for photography.  The bays and the ocean offer unlimited opportunities for creativity.  The same scene looks completely different with a simple change in cloud cover, or time of day, and even the time of the year.  It can range from peaceful and serene in calm conditions to intensely violent during a major storm.  The bays and sea along the Oregon Coast are ever changing.

Waterfall and streams have a beauty of their own.  All of these images are combined through the one thing they have in common.

A Study on Living Creatures

Wildlife are abundant along the Oregon coast.  It is very common to find Roosevelt elk out feeding in farm fields or along logged hillsides.  In some coastal towns elk can be found eating rose bushes in front yards!  National, State, County, and Forest Service and BLM parks all offer opportunities across the US.

Fall in Love With Fall

Fall is the most colorful time of teh year.  The Oregon Coast offers some vibrant fall colors with Vine Maple, Big Leaf Maple, and a host of other trees, bushes, and shrubs changing colors.    The Willamette valley and Cascades in Oregon and Washington also offer opportunities for colorful, vibrant images.

Mountains, Trails, and Nature

The hills, the mountains, and the forests all offer up their ruggedness and beauty to the photographer.  Many photographers spend their careers searching for that elusive and special mountain light that is only available at high altitude up in the mountains.

Fine Art and Photographic Explorations

Every photographer has their “Thing.”  They have preferred styles and subjects.  Some have only one or two, some have many.  Every photographer also takes photos as they present themselves.  This may be from a vacation to a National Park, a sudden appearance of a comet, an eclipse, or something that stands out in their every day life.  I like to refer to these as photographic explorations because the photographic artist gets to “explore” something new, or different, and this can keep the creative spirit flowing.  Also, it sounds much better than calling them miscellaneous images!  Photographic explorations can include a wide variety of traditional  photography and compositional fine art images.
