About me

Don Backman
Don Backman while backpacking in the Three Sisters Wilderness.

My lifelong love of photography started in 1972 or ’73 in Mr. Lind’s art room at school.  He introduced me to the magic of watching an image develop and appear on paper in the darkroom.  Within a year I had my own small darkroom set up in our one bathroom at home, much to my family’s dismay.  You can’t open the bathroom door for siblings until you have completed all the steps in developing a roll of film or creating prints.

Life led in another direction, and while I continued taking photos, athletics, college, graduate school, and earning a living got in the way of developing my art.

Outdoor photography is a lot of fun.  I’m lucky to live in an area with spectacular sunsets.  I love hiking in the mountains looking for the perfect light.  My interests vary, wildlife, fine art, floral, macro, the list goes on.

Photojournalism is a fun challenge, and a new way to express my art.   While not reflected here, my work is viewable online with the Tillamook County Pioneer newspaper.
